As baby boomers age, America has to find better ways to ensure that everyone has access to excellent health care – whenever and wherever they need it, says Paul Tang, M.D., the Palo Alto Medical Foundation’s (PAMF) chief innovation and technology officer.

He is heading up an exciting new project that looks at how relationships can be forged in communities to improve the quality of life and health of Americans. The focus goes beyond treating injury or illness at the doctor’s office or hospital. It includes keeping people healthy, happy and independent at home as they age.

“To reform America’s health care system, we must rethink everything,” he says. “That includes reinventing our role in sustaining the health of our communities. We’re out to create a partnership with our communities around health, not just health care.”

Cancer Tests for Men

According to the CDC’s National Program of Cancer Registries statistics, men are more likely than women to develop cancer. In addition, men face a higher risk of dying from cancer than women.

Despite this, studies show that men are less likely than women to get routine preventive care, including cancer screening. June is national Men’s Health Month and a perfect time to raise awareness about cancer in men.

Stroke is the third leading cause of death and it is the leading cause of adult disability in the United States. What makes it particularly scary is that it can occur suddenly and in such a way that the person having the stroke may be unaware that there is anything seriously wrong.

As I tell my elderly patients each day, it is never too late to reap the benefits of regular exercise. The health benefits of exercise continue throughout life, and the golden years of retirement should not equate with a sedentary life. No matter how long it has been since you exercised, or how old you are, you can find an appropriate exercise to boost your fitness, energy and overall well-being.
